Springs play a crucial role in the safe and efficient operation of a garage door by supporting its weight during opening and closing. A broken spring, which can occur due to wear and tear, rust formation or improper maintenance, requires immediate attention.

Safety Warning

While they may look harmless, garage door springs can be dangerous. Because they are under constant tension, a sudden failure can cause them to snap, transforming them into lethal projectiles. A damaged spring may no longer be able to support the door’s weight, allowing it to fall and potentially causing an injury. Therefore, it’s better to contact a professional garage door company to handle a spring issue than attempt a do-it-yourself repair project.

Should You Replace Both Garage Door Springs?

Garage door systems may have torsion or extension springs. The former are located above the door and operate by turning, while the latter are on either side of the opening and expand or contract during raising or lowering.

Many doors have a one- or two-spring setup, although larger, heavier products can have more. While it’s possible to replace one spring without impacting the door’s performance, most garage door professionals recommend upgrading all the springs simultaneously. Doing so helps you avoid the inconvenience and potentially higher cost of another repair project in the near future.

Garage Door Spring Replacement Process

Residential garage door spring repair service begins with an inspection to determine the extent of the damage. The preparation process involves unplugging the opener and disconnecting it from the door by pulling on the handle. Removing and replacing the springs requires using a winding bar to eliminate the remaining tension.

After unwinding the springs, the next step involves removing the center bolts that hold the springs together. A technician will slide the new spring onto the shaft while ensuring the red winding cone is on the left side of the garage while facing the door from the inside. The final steps include tightening the spring and reattaching the cables, drums and other components. Testing is also essential to ensure the springs and door function correctly and safely.
